There are many reasons to appeal a felony conviction in Alabama. One of the biggest reasons is that the living conditions in Alabama prisons are terrible. Surprisingly, the prison conditions for women are often much worse than for the men. This has been recently documented by a federal investigation into the condition at the Julia Tutwiler prison.
The Department of Justice recently concluded a lengthy investigation into complaints about the sexual abuse of prisoners at Tutwiler, and found the allegations to be true. The DOJ described the living conditions at Tutwiler as being unconstitutional, and described “a history of unabated staff-on-prisoner sexual abuses and harassment.”
We will post more information about this investigation at a later time. For now, we recommend you read more details about this travesty of justice at this news site
